One of the best moments I had this year at Partner Day in Boston, was getting to see Greg from Concentrate in New Zealand share his tips on specialisation with other agency owners.
I first met Greg when he and his business partner Owen purchased HubSpot and I was their Channel Consultant to help them learn the tool and create their first inbound marketing campaign. They had a bit of a delayed start, as often happens a number of other priorities kept taking over and so a few weeks in there was no work happening and they had some excellent excuses, all valid but still no campaign was getting out the door.
As anyone who knows me, I am very comfortable telling people the cold hard truth and after a few calls where Greg and Owen were telling me wonderful "the dog ate my homework" stories I knew it was time to call it like it is. It was November and the guys were starting to think about the summer holidays that were coming up and hinted on another delay "sure maybe we will do our first campaign when we get back in the new year".
I was having none of it !
I told them to get their feet off their desks and put the fishing rods away for a few more days - yes, I called them out. Summer, anywhere in the world is the perfect time of year to get the right type of content into the hands of your buyer personas who are researching and reading up on their challenges in their industry.
The jolt worked, Greg and Owen quickly prepared a short ebook about why brochures don't work anymore in certain markets and posted it with a call to action about booking a time in their calendars for a coffee with them to discuss how they can help businesses with their digital marketing. Off they went on holidays and when they returned, they were back to back for weeks with prospect meetings, having coffees in person and virtually, they even closed a couple of deals too. I was delighted for them and now they were starting to get a return on their HubSpot investment plus lots more.
Fast forward to September 2018, there Greg was, up on stage sharing how their focus on technology companies is working for them and giving advice to other agency owners on how to specialisation can work for them too.
I felt very proud to know, that in a small way I helped Greg & Owen in their journey to owning a successful agency and that by not letting them away without doing some hard work in the beginning.
