Are you focusing on the right things to get to the next level in 2018?

By Clodagh S. Higgins - February 13, 2018

Focus, what does that even mean? You probably hear it all the time “You have to stay focused”, but can you really do that all the time, on several things, at the same time? Or does it focus mean to concentrate at one thing at a time?

Why is it important to have focus? Well, because it makes sure things get done the way they should in the appropriate time frame. Divide your time and concentrate about one thing at the time. Don’t do everything at once, give one thing your undivided attention and then move on to the next.

What should you be focusing on to get your agency to the next level?

- Focusing too much on doing everything instead of doing some things well?

If you are eager to do well in this business it can easily become the reality that you want to do it all. You offer your services to everyone that wants it and don’t take into account what you actually know about and are good at.

Don’t spread yourself or your agencies resources too thin. No one is superman. Maybe narrow your services to one specific market and become the best on that specific field.

A good tip would be to hire the people that know the fields you want to work with. Instead of suppressing what your employees are good at to fit somewhere else, let them flourish in their fields of expertise.

Just remember to be able to change with the times. So build skill sets that can adapt. And maybe the most important thing in relation to this; be willing to!

- Focusing too much on the quantity of your clients instead of the quality?

It is easy to get caught up in the financials. More clients, more money in. But what is the point of having clients you cannot deliver your services to in a proper fashion?

In the beginning, when money is short, don’t fall for the trap of earning a quick buck. Who your clients are will automatically reflect back on you and your business. They will set the tone for what future potential customers will think of you when considering your services.

Referring to the point above, figure out what field you want to work with, and acquire clients accordingly. Do your research with the potential customers, and don’t be afraid to let some prospects go if not a fit.

The clients should also be fitted to the employees that will be working with them. The more interesting and suitable the better performance will come out of the relationship.

So remember, in the long hall, a bad relationship will not just hurt your client, but you and your reputation as well.

- Focusing too much on getting clients and not enough on your employees?

In other words, can the agency handle its workload? If you want the clients, you need enough employees to handle the workload. And not just anyone, the right people for the job.

Make sure you have the right people in place beforehand. It’ll make you capable to give your client the best possible welcome. So don’t sign a customer and then rush through a recruiting process to find the right person for the job.

An uneven relation between number of clients and customers will eventually lead to poor performance and deliverability.

- Focusing too much on what your employees are doing and nothing on how they are feeling?

If you only care about the work and the quality of what your employees are doing, you set yourself up to miss important factors of why they are performing as they are.

If someone is not happy, many people can push through it in the beginning, motivated on other short-term factors. But, in the long hall, few can stay at the top of their game if not satisfied with their core values.

Maybe a simple change in a workday will let a person flourish in a way never before. So listen close, and listen well.

One way of controlling this is conducting monthly one-on-one meetings with your employees. This doesn’t even have to be your job. Assign it to someone in the field of human relations and get them to report back to you.

- Focusing too much on the reach of your marketing instead of what you are actually putting out there?

Are you just concerned with getting noticed and that fast? Just remember that it is just as important to get recognized for the quality of what you deliver, as it will reflect back on the work you are able to do for potential customers.

So focus on doing quality works, even if it takes a bit more time. If you have a lot of bad content, you will eventually have to make better ones, hence spending more time on it anyway.

Another outcome of bad content can even end up being you don’t have any time at all, because the all the bad content lead to the shut-down of your agency. You don’t want that to happen, do you?

Just make sure you have quality processes in place to give your clients, yourself and everyone else the quality content you know you can produce.
