Finding an agency coach is the thing that will ultimately help a lot of agencies with getting on the right track, and grow to where they should be. Often, agency owners or leaders know that there’s something wrong, but not what exactly. An agency coach can help you find out just that, and also bring an fresh, educated, outside perspective on how things are.

When trying to find a coach that is the right fit for your agency, it may feel like there are a million things to take into consideration. And there is, but don’t you worry. Below you’ll find an outline of the different questions you should ask to determine the fit of the coach,  which can help you on the way to find the best coach for you and your company.

The 11 questions you should ask to ensure you find a coach with the right fit for your agency:

1. What made you get into agency coaching?

Here you should really be able to see the passion in their eyes.  Try to determine if helping other agencies is really something of interest, or if it’s just the money. They should be able to give you the feeling that they care about your success, and genuinely like what they do for a living.

2. Tell me about your business experience

If the coach has experience, he or she should be able to tell you about a couple of successful client relationships they have had. It doesn’t have to be the longest experience in the world, as long as the experience is good. They should be proud to tell you, and give examples related to you.

3. Do you have a coaching certification?

If they have a certifications this would of course be reassuring, but it shouldn’t be a determining factor. In the lack of it, they should be able to tell you about their qualifications at the least. In the coaching business, experience is as good as any certification. Ultimately, they have to be able to implement what they know to be able to help you.

4. What agencies similar to mine have you provided coaching services for?

Look for answers showing that they know the business you are in, and that they are able to provide good results in that environment. They don’t have to work solely in your business, but they should know about what is going on. After all, it’s the business you are in you want to succeed in.

5. Describe your coaching style

A BIG plus here and what you really need to be a part of their answer is that they listen well and closely, to be able to determine your needs. You should always be open for change and to try new ways of doing business, but it shouldn’t be too far out on the countryside for what works for your everyday work life.

6. Can you provide 2-3 agency clients i can call for reference?

Here, you should be met with openness. Maybe a list with references or even give you some names and information straight ahead while talking to you. The honest confessions of past clients will be one of your most valuable sources of intel. So make sure you do thorough work on this, and find out as much as you can.

7. Do you have a particular coaching model you like to use?

This is where you should be let in on their process and style of coaching. This indicator has the potential to be a determining factor for a good fit. But, again, remember to be open to try new things in order to grow and scale.

8. Do you prefer face-to-face coaching, video or some other form for communication?

You need to make sure that the way of communication fits your needs and, most importantly, what you are able to use. For example, if you do not have the technology for it, video conferencing would be hard to do. Maybe this would be the time to invest in some new technology and evolve your agencies way of working.

9. How would I reach you if there was an urgent issue or question?

Make sure they are available in a manner that fits and suits you. Whether that is immediately, in a few hours or days - on the phone, email or in person. It has to work for you. If you work in a field where things happen in a fast pace and you need to be able to jump around quickly, you need someone that can respond within a short time frame.

10. Give a small case with a problem you are facing and see how they respond.

This will really show you how they work and how they are able to listen to your problem, and then apply the best solution for you and your agency. As an example, you can ask: “I want to expand my social media presence, how can you help with that?”.

11. Finally you should of course as for packaging and pricing.

You shouldn’t forget this point, even if it can be a touchy subject for some. Ultimately, you can find the best coach in the world for you and your agency, but what does that help if you cannot afford it? Make sure you know what you can spend on a coach, and remember that with most coaches - you get what you pay for.
