Core Values . . . one of the secrets to success in your Digital Agency

Firstly, what do we mean by Core Values?

These are the fundamental beliefs we have as people that we can apply to the principles of how we run our agencies.

They can help us in our hiring process and how we choose our clients. They can help us make big decisions for our team and our business. When you have core values agreed upon and clearly defined in your agency they can keep you on the right path to fulfil your goals by providing an unwavering guide.

Employees now have the upper-hand in the sense that they can choose where they want to work.

When you interview a candidate, you will know that you “click” with that person because you share similar interests or values with them. You will also have a sense of their technical skills and capabilities. However, you cannot solely rely on these to assess whether your next hire is really a good fit for your agency.

To make sure you are hiring the right talent, you would want to look into your agency’s core values.

As a start, write down your own core values, there is a great exercise on how to do this in the book Contagious Culture I recommended earlier or if you download the Agency Positioning exercises.

There are a series of questions to help you clarify these.

Choose at least five core values and discuss these with your team. Make sure everyone is aligned. Do the core values you have chosen reflect how you agency operates? These questions will help you get on the right track:

  1. Regardless of their role, what does it take for a member of your team to truly succeed at your agency?
  2. What are the formal and informal standards by which your agency hires, educates and promotes employees?
  3. What are the things that you would never do to serving clients and managing your team?
  4. Can your team recite your agency core values?

Pro Tip
Create a new page on your website that includes your core values.

Example:

We are a looking for a marketing expert who is fearless, likes getting results for our clients, has a sense of fun and is ambitious. If you are interested, please send your resume along with a video telling us why you would be a good fit for our agency.

Another idea is to put up posters with your core values on them around the office.

You could also combine a team building event like art classes where your team can create the posters or art work together.
